The college junior had torn frantically through city streets for three days, convinced that secret agents were chasing him. Diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder, Jonathan was successfully treated with lithium and went on to lead a normal life, becoming a lawyer and mental-health advocate. Most of the 13 million Americans currently suffering from severe mental illnesses are not as lucky in finding effective treatment.
