2018 NewYork BIO Panel Discussion: Role of Philanthropy in Medical Entrepreneurship
NewYorkBIO supports the development and growth of New York State’s life science industry, and serves its members and the life science community by providing a network for public policy, industry advocacy, and community development. NewYorkBIO brings together over 250 of New York’s bioscience companies, universities, research institutions, and others dedicated to advancing life science research and commercialization.
The 2018 NewYorkBIO Annual Meeting took place on Wednesday, May 16 – Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 10 on the Park @ Time Warner Center in New York City. The second day of the conference focused on collaboration and innovative partnerships, and the delivery of scientific breakthroughs, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes. In line with this theme, The Pershing Square Foundation President and Pershing Square Sohn Cancer Research Alliance Co-Founder and Executive Director Olivia Tournay Flatto, PhD, hosted and moderated a panel on the “Role of Philanthropy in Medical Entrepreneurship”.
The panel explored the role of philanthropic investment in the life sciences ecosystem in New York. The role of philanthropy within academia, as well as for-profit entities, has been rapidly developing and becoming increasingly complex and vital to further advance the field. The panelists discussed the ways each model of investment plays a role in this particular New York City ecosystem, the success and challenges each member has experienced, and recommendations for navigating future partnerships.
